There could be two things to celebrate.
1. The actual landing in 1863.
2. The progress the settlement has made over the intervening years.
I have always understood that it was the actual landing that was celebrated.

When we were attending Primary School in Puhoi, we learnt a song the nuns had written especially for the 1963 Celebrations. "Here we are in 63, 63,..." "Bright, bright, bright and none too soon we celebrate the month of June". Now as I remember it, this song celebrated the the actual landing in 1863.
