Re-enactment

The majority of those people I've spoken to think a re-enactment could be a great idea. After some investigation as to the tide suitability, it was reported that the tide in June 2013 might be in our favour for a re-enactment. Thanks to Des for hunting that down.

Of course boats and willing people must be found. The Mahurangi group has expressed interest and maybe they can come up with some ideas about boats --- we do not need the "Queen Mary." The "Jane Gifford" maybe a bit presumptuous?

It is important that Maori play a significant part in this as they conveyed the original settlers up river in 1863. Pioneer and Maori traditional dress would be appropriate and respectful.

The land below the hall used for 125th celebrations is now probably unsuitable because trees having overgrown the site. Maybe the new wharves would be ideal with a welcome ceremony taking place there (depending on the weather), followed by a parade or a welcome meal.

Suggestions anyone?

  1. Hi Maureen....the Jane Gifford is too big to get under the bridge (the mast)...I do have a working scaled down 'copy' of a mahurangi punt that could be used to build a couple more, and the Mahurangi Regatta had some (genuine !!)reproduction punts... the owner lives on Moir Hill Rd. I believe. Do we know what sort of waka were used...may I dare suggest that they would not have been the 'war' canoe type, but a more practical trading type considering that Te Hemera Tauia was actively engaged in supplying food to Auckland ??maybe Ngati Whatua have some ideas about this ? the re-enactment does sound like a good idea.(get growing your beards Puhoi men !!)
I have some ideas regarding an entrance way into the Centennial Grove that replicates the nikau whare.

  2. Yes, I am aware the Jane Gifford is too large for our river and bridge, but what a treat it would be.

I agree that the transporting canoes were probably not the large war faring type but smaller as they also ferried fruit and veg up river to the settlers on many occasions.

Our Mahurangi Maori friends have indicated they could assist with the re enactment.

Richard, you are welcome to the meeting on Monday, 21st Sept, Puhoi Hotel dining room. 1pm. Bring your ideas.

    Thanks for your comment.
